What is modern quilting?
There are as many answers to this question as there are modern quilters, but here are a few characteristics of modern quilts from The Modern Quilt Guild’s website:
  • Make primarily functional rather than decorative quilts
  • Use asymmetry in quilt design
  • Rely less on repetition than on the interaction of quilt block motifs
  • Contain reinterpreted tradition
  • Embrace simplicity and minimalism
  • Utilize alternative block structures or lack of visible block structure
  • Incorporate increased use of negative space
  • Are inspired by modern art and architecture
  • Frequently use improvisational piecing
  • Contain bold colors or color combinations and graphic prints
  • Often use gray and white as neutrals
  • Reflect an increased use of solid fabrics
  • Focus on finishing quilts on home sewing machines

Who can join the Bainbridge Island Modern Quilt Guild?
Anyone with an interest in modern quilting. Beginners are welcome. You will find lots of inspiration in this group.

I’m a new quilter.  Am I out of my league?
No worries. Our Guild is friendly and encouraging and we’re excited to see new quilters just getting
started. No quilting experience is required to become a member. You can come to a meeting before you’ve even completed your first quilt!

What is a Sew In?
A Sew In is open sewing time where members work on their own projects in a friendly atmosphere of quilting and chatting! Our Sew Ins are from 11 am to 4 pm the second Sunday of the month except May (Mother’s Day). We supply the tables and chairs, irons, cutting mats.  You bring a machine, a project, your sewing tools and a lunch. Donations of treats are always welcomed!  November Sew-In is for the local team of American Hero Quilts.

What’s a typical meeting like?
So far our meetings are part of our Sunday Sew Ins. We meet at 11:00.  Sharing closes the meeting and we move on to projects.  Bring your snack or brown bag lunch.  Locations vary so check Facebook or join the Newsletter email list (usually just one mailing per month.

I do not live on Bainbridge Island, can I come to your Sew Ins?
Absolutely. We have members from all over Kitsap County and the Olympic Peninsula.

What does it cost?
You are welcome as a guest to 2 Sew Ins. After that, we’d love for you to become a member at $50/year. Membership runs from January to December and is pro-rated to $30 after June 15.  Find our membership form here.
